FAQs
Here are some of the typical questions that people ask me about neurofeedback. If you have other questions that are not listed, don't hesitate to contact me.
-
How Often Do You Train?Usually clients train once a week for a two-hour period. Some prefer coming in twice a week for an hour each time. It really depends on your schedule and mine. At a minimum, one hour of training a week is recommended.
-
What Is A Brain Map?A brain map is a measure of brain activity over the entire scalp, and once recorded, the results are compared to a database of normals to show where there are any discrepancies. Once the precise locations are known, training can be done at those areas. Just like an actual map, the shortest direction to the desired location can be attained with the addition of a brain map.
-
Can I Train if I'm Currently on Medication?Research shows that there may be additional benefits to training if you are on medications. With stimulants there seems to be an additive effect when combined with Neurofeedback. Check with your health provider before changing meds, but it is perfectly fine to train while taking medication.
-
Does Neurofeedback Actually Change My Brain Activity?Research has shown that Neurofeedback actually increases the amount of grey and white matter in the brain, based on Functional MRI studies. By having a brain map at the beginning of training, as well as a brain map every 20 sessions, you can actually see improvement in brain activity over time.
-
Are The Results Permanent Or Would Maintenance Sessions Be Required?Rarely does anyone need to continue training once significant improvement is made, so results do seem to last. In the event that additional sessions are required, usually once a month is sufficient.
-
What Is The Overall Success Rate Of Neurofeedback?I wish I could say 100%, but on average, it is close to 80%.
-
Why Haven't I Heard Of Neurofeedback Before?Neurofeedback is not well recognized because there is no pharmaceutical company or large, well funded organization with a patent that promotes it. Studies have been done to show neurofeedback's effectiveness, but these articles are published in less prestigious journals. Doctors typically are not educated about alternative therapies because the medical model is based on the principle that scientific studies need to show that a treatment is more effective than placebo and is not harmful. There are no reports from the work I've done or from others in the field that neurofeedback is harmful. Also, I know from the clients I've worked with that neurofeedback is effective.
-
What Are Some Payment Options?Payment is expected at the time of service with a major credit card, cash, check, Advance Care Credit or FSA/HSA funds. In partnership with Advance Care Credit, they offer affordable payment plans with up to 14 months same as cash, interest free financing for my services. Go to www.mymedicalfunding.com to fill out an application and have an answer within minutes.
-
Does Insurance Cover Neurofeedback?Dr. McManus does not file with insurance, however, many insurance plans do cover some portion of each session depending on individual plans. Check your carrier to see if they reimburse for CPT codes 90901 (Biofeedback, all modalities) and 95957 or 95816 (qEEG assessment).
-
Are There Discounts or Special Rates?A 10% discount is available when paying for 10 sessions in advance. Special rates are available for families or partners who are available to train at the same time. Discounts are available for military or other professions dedicated to serving others. Check with Dr. McManus if you feel you have a special case.
